Abstract

Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime proposes that low self-control leads to engagement in deviant behaviors, parents must properly socialize self-control in their children, and self-control fully mediates the parenting-deviance association. A critical analysis of the empirical evidence generated suggests a number of unresolved issues regarding the theory that remain to be investigated. Some of the specific issues addressed include determining which aspects of parenting influence the etiology of self-control and to what extent self-control mediates the parenting-deviance association.
