Abstract

The department of health in partnership with NIHME, is implementing a Victims of Violence and Abuse Prevention Programme (VVAPP). This program has been running for over a year and aims to better equip National Health Service (NHS) staff to support victims of domestic and sexual violence and abuse. There are several expert groups to address the different areas of the field in developing national service guidelines, advising the government about policy and improve practice and access to services. The groups cover domestic violence, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault and prostitution, pornography and trafficking related to male and female survivors, victims and perpetrators including children, adolescents and adults. Abuse/trauma and neglect of all kinds especially in childhood is a core underlying issue of many mental health problems and the most complex clients often present with a history of abuse. In any case suffice it to say that there are many who welcome this move from the government to attempt to address some of the most endemic and pervasive problems in our society. Alongside the move for further provision of therapy though the NHS and if funding materializes, maybe will come closer to addressing these fundamental needs in our society.
