Abstract

The standard practice in domestic violence interventions is to treat each member of the couple separately in individual or group modalities. Using a family-ecological intervention, Structural Ecosystems Therapy (SET), in a clinical trial for African American HIV+ women, the authors have treated violent couples in a couples therapy modality. The focus of treatment is developing conflict management skills and strengthening support networks to decrease isolation. This article presents a case report and guidelines for determining which domestic violence cases can be treated conjointly. Further research is needed to refine the intervention and empirically determine its effectiveness.
