Abstract

The Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS) are intelligent transportation systems that provide routing, guidance, surveillance, and control to aircraft and vehicles in order to keep up the airport capacity under all local weather conditions, while maintaining the required level of safety; however, reflections, multipath, and shadows due to buildings, equipment, and other reflecting objects on the airport surface make it difficult, if not sometimes impossible, for existing A-SMGCS to reliably cover the whole aerodrome. In these cases another sensor must step in to fill those gaps. Digital video cameras not only can solve these kinds of problems filling blind spots in the existing A-SMGCS, but also provide a cost effective solution. This article presents an innovative system for airport surface movement control based on intelligent video cameras.
