Abstract

The relationship has been studied between alcohol intake and changes in plasma lipid content with reference to the epidemiological survey data on 1926 men aged 40--59 years, living in the Petrogradsky district of Leningrad. The increased intake of alcohol gave rise to the elevation in blood plasma of total cholesterol, triglycerides, specifically alpha-cholesterol and its proportion in total cholesterol. It appeared that alcohol intake is dissimilarly related to changes in lipid content in persons with low ( less than or equal to 43 mg %) and high (less than or equal to 73 mg %) content of alpha-cholesterol. In low alpha-cholesterol content, the augmentation of cholesterol and triglyceride levels proceeded in parallel to the increased alcohol intake, while in high alpha-cholesterol levels, no changes in the lipid concentration were recorded.
