Abstract

The article discusses the definition of torture. The United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, defines torture as an "act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person." However, the definition of the UN Convention does not tackle the broader environment, which distinguishes torture from other forms of coercion and manipulation.
