Abstract

This article describes the concept of MeetBike as an alliance of environmentally-sound transportation modes that can establish a competitive alternative to the private car. MeetBike is a network of cities and professionals that promote bicycle transportation but also refers to the idea of bikes meeting public transportation, bikes meeting car sharing, bikes meeting a variety of sustainable transportation modes. The author describes how this approach takes place on very different levels, from occasional short trips by bike to completely getting rid of the car. The article also considers the different impact of MeetBike approaches in urban areas compared to suburban areas. The article focuses on four arenas where bicycle transportation could be utilized: short car trips replaced by bike; long trips replaced by bike and public transport; pupil's bike replaces by parent's taxi; mobility chains replaced by MeetBike Alliance; and no second car in a household or living without any owned car. The author reports on sample projects in European cities, including Hamburg, Germany; Uppsala, Sweden; and Bremen, Germany. (TRID abstract)
