Abstract

This paper discusses the ways that comparative methods have been used to identify and interpret similarities and differences across geographical space. Drawing examples from comparative research on gender and the welfare state and focusing particularly on indicator-based, (mostly) cross-national research, I discuss the potential benefits of making comparisons. I also discuss some of the more important challenges facing researchers who wish to conduct meaningful comparative studies or to interpret comparative data
