Abstract

This paper reflects on a two and a half year cross-national study across three regions, which explored the experience of non-governmental actors in ?new governance spaces?, that is, partnerships and other governance arrangements where non-governmental actors were invited to participate alongside state and sometimes others in the development and implementation of policy. This was a study which sought to be participative and dialogical in ways that would recognise and take account of the nature and politics of non-governmental action. More broadly we aimed to enable research participants to create and apply new knowledge and meanings as part of the research process. This was an aim that was only partly realised and this article reflects on the challenges not only of involving participants but also of developing an equal dialogue between researchers from different parts of the world.
