Abstract

The nature and organization of the cyclo (pedal-powered tricycle) industry in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is examined by means of social surveys. Particular attention is focused on the social and economic organization of this activity, which forms a major component of the city's public transport system. Significant differences are identified between migrant and resident cyclo riders in respect of rental versus ownership, access to capital and other forms of support, and the effort expended in earning an income. Migrants' rural-urban linkages are also investigated through both rural and urban interviews. On the basis of the research results, conclusions and priorities are formulated with respect to the planning of a development project aimed at providing cyclo riders with more regular and secure income-earnings opportunities.
