Abstract

A static roof test cannot determine the maximum intrusion or intrusion speed into the passenger compartment under rollover conditions; a dynamic test can, and can also lead to a dummy-based test with associated injury criteria. Three leading dynamic test devices are discussed, and it is concluded that the Jordan Rollover System has the best repeatability and many practical advantages. This test device can be the basis for a vehicle rating system or a compliance test. Additional work is needed to agree on initial conditions, to upgrade an anthropomorphic dummy and to develop associated injury criteria for use in a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or a New Car Assessment Program rating system. An international working group could work to resolve these remaining issues, and to help reach consensus.
