Abstract

Suitably modified vehicles and personal assistance are often prerequisites for the disabled and elderly to be able to travel. Experimental studies have provided guidelines for modification of taxi cabs. Volvo's prototype taxi, which can be used by a person confined to a wheelchair, is described. The problems of entry and exit associated with special vehicles for transport of the disabled and the question of safety for people in wheelchairs during travel by these vehicles is discussed in relation to the results of experimental studies in which different models of wheelchairs, anchored in different ways and containing dummies, have been subjected to crash tests. Measures aimed at making it easier for the elderly and disabled to travel by town buses and long?distance coaches are discussed in relation to various experiments and practical tests. Development work in designing better wheelchairs with the aim of facilitating travel is discussed. A special wheelchair that can be carried and lifted is described.
