Abstract

Optical properties of smoke are described as the optical density and the mass optical density. Calculations of these properties are presented for various fuels in different size compartments. The toxicity of smoke is addressed using the carbon monoxide concentration as a surrogate measure. In assessing the hazard of smoke, the optical and toxicological properties of smoke are shown to be more dependent on the burning rate and exposing energy flux than on material selection.
