Abstract

This paper presents the results of an investigation to measure the aerodynamic forces and moments on vehicles in cross winds using an experimental rig that propels vehicle models across an environmental wind tunnel in which an atmospheric boundary layer has been simulated. The rationale for these tests is presented and the experimental apparatus is briefly described. The necessarily rather complex methods of data analysis are discussed and some results presented for the aerodynamic forces on a model lorry. These results highlight the importance of modelling both atmospheric turbulence and vehicle motion when attempting to measure cross wind forces on ground vehicles.
