Abstract

A life events approach to developing an index of societal well-being is described. The incidence of negative life events is measured and the seriousness of these problems is rated. By summing the seriousness of problems, one produces an overall measure of the amount of troubles affecting people. On both the individual and the societal level this scale of troubles can be used as a general measure of well-being.
