Abstract

This article examines dominant Asian cultural and familial values that influence child abuse and neglect in Asian American immigrant families. Clinical and nonclinical case vignettes, derived from the authors' practice experiences, are incorporated throughout the article to illustrate how some of the salient cultural factors are being played out in child abuse situations among this ethnic group. Finally, the article offers therapists/clinicians culturally sensitive child abuse prevention and intervention strategies that are deemed effective in working with Asian immigrant families struggling with the issue of child abuse.
