Abstract

A stochastic model for compartment fires in buildings is derived from basic physical laws. It consists of just three variables, which form a Markov vector satisfying a stochastic differential equation. The deterministic version of the model can be calibrated to closely mimic more elaborate models. Statistical variability models the intrinsic variability of the flame phenomenon as well as our lack of knowledge of the conditions under which the fire will ultimately develop.
