Abstract

This research review provides strong support for claims by battered women's advocates that domestic violence is harmful to children. The author argues against custody mediation between abusers and their victims but acknowledges that relatively few victims identify themselves. Some suggestions on ways to identify violent relationships are offered, plus some ideas on measures mediators may take in those jurisdictions where mediation is mandatory. Research findings suggest taking a new look at parent-child contact after violent marriages terminate in divorce, including a stronger focus on the best interests of the child rather than on parental rights.
