Abstract

The following contribution tries to highlight the background and the stimuli for research and development activities which can be observed in the field of automatic fire detection today. It is important to mention that the market for fire detection equipment and installation is mainly controlled by the need to meet the requirements set by standards and regulations which are given by national or international approval authorities. This fact is the background for the great influence of the work in standardization bodies and testing institutes on the activities which are going on in research and development in this field. Nevertheless, there are other driving forces too behind these activities which have more or less technical andlor scientific reasons. In the following some of them are briefly outlined.
