Abstract

Heat transfer to insulated steel can be calculated from the approximate numerical equation d[theta]s/dt = A([theta]g-[theta]s)-B d[theta]g/dt where [theta]s is the steel temperature and [theta]g is the gas temperature. A limiting form of the La Laplace transform of the exact equation is used to derive optimum values for A and B. Some steel temperatures calculated from the numerical equation are compared with the exact solution for a particular variation of [theta]s with time. The Laplace transform is also used to estimate a time constant for heat transfer to the steel and an effective delay time. The results agree well with calculations by Wickstrom and confirm formally his suggested "best" values for these two parameters.
