Abstract

The effectiveness of sprinklers is examined by comparing fires they extinguish or control with fires they fail to extinguish or control. It is shown that sprinklers substantially reduce the probability of fire area exceeding 100m2 but that they normally have little effect until the fire area reaches 3 m2. The effect, of sprinklers on the incidence of damage to the building fabric is also looked at.This paper is part of a research study aimed at developing quantitative fire engineering methods for the assessment of fire risk. The results will be used to calibrate the mathematical models on which these assessments are based.
