Abstract

A three-dimensional formulation has been utilized to determine the incident radiant heat flux on a cylinder surface which is engulfed in flames. The model has been developed as part of a study concerned with thermal protection systems for rail tank cars carrying hazardous materials. The circumferential and longitudinal variation of heat fluxes on the cylinder surface are determined. The effect of wind on the inclination of the flame and the location of the points of maximum radiant heat flux on the cylinder have been determined.
