Abstract

The effects of commercially available 1,2-methyl-1,2-oxaphospholan-5-one 2-oxide (OP), melamine, and novolac on the limiting oxygen index and UL94 test behavior of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) were studied. A synergistic flame-retardant effect between OP and melamine was observed at the ratio 3: 2 of the additives. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that charring in the HIPS formulations is mainly caused by an interaction between the additives. The FT-IR study of the OP and melamine-based formulation showed that the charring results in the formation of polyaromatic and polyphosphazene-type structures. The data supporting low temperature decomposition of the symm-triazine ring in the condensed state on pyrolysis are presented.
