Abstract

This article examines the affect of Michigan's 1971 legislation which lowered the legal drinking age to 18 years. In 1972, alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes involving drivers 18-20 years old increased much more than alcohol-involved crashes of drivers in other age groups. Adolescents under age 18 also had an increase in alcohol-related problems, perhaps because young legal drinker companions provided them with alcohol.
