Abstract

Using a new instrument (the thematic test system Corporal) measuring simple and complex functions of attention during the course of alcohol abstinence, 90 patients of alcohol withdrawal clinics were examined. The data suggested a decrease in performance after four weeks from the beginning of abstinence, more significant and longer lasting in younger people than in older ones. After 12 weeks full performance is not yet restored in both age groups. Therefore, for prognostic purposes, it is recommended to measure the course of performance in accordance to the withdrawal treatment by applying suitable testing procedure.
