Abstract

By reviewing 45049 blood alcohol files of the period 1.5.1964 to 31.12.1978 it was possible to trace sequentially data of drug administration in association with alcohol. During 1964 1% of cases were involved, during 1978 25%. Approximately every sixth case was checked by a chemico-toxicological investigation. The police selection of the cases was based rather on the number and frequency of single doses of the alleged ingestion than on long-term medication. In our experience it is mainly psychopharmaceutics and analgetics containing barbiturates and codein which are used in a way not medically justified, in other words which are misused. If the consumption of alcohol promotes effects and side-effects of these substances, a considerable reduction in the psychophysical performance and thus in the driving ability can be expected.
