Abstract

Drinking experiments were performed with 40 Vol.% ethanol in orange juice alone and with admixtures of higher aliphatic alcohols. Before, and 1 and 9 hours after the consumption of the beverage the following tests were performed: reactiometer test, bimanual coordination test, d 2-attention-stress test and subjective behavior test. During the acute phase, 1 hour after drinking stopped, the expected performance deterioration correlated by and large with the blood-ethanol concentration (BEC). During the postethanol phase, 9 hours after drinking stopped, (BEC less than 0,1 g(per mille)) the congener alcohols or their metabolites caused marked increases of the error figures and subjective hangover symptoms. This appears to be related to the length of the carbon-chain of the higher alcohols.
