Abstract

The effect of a relatively large amount of ethanol (2 g/kg, 25% in saline resulting in about 2.5 mg/ml blood) on the changes of arterial blood P(O2) hydrogen ion and lactate concentrations during asphyxia was studied in rabbits anesthetized with urethane. Twenty minutes after alcohol or saline injection as control, the animals were subjected to asphyxia by occlusion of the trachea with a forceps. Blood samples were taken from the femoral artery as frequently as possible during asphyxia. There was no significant difference between the alcohol and control groups in either the pre-asphyxia or the postmortem P(O2) value. The changes of the P(O2) during asphyxia did not differ significantly between the two groups. As to the postmortem [H+] the values of the control group were significantly higher than those of the alcohol group. The higher values in this group were probably due to the higher lactate values, which correlated positively with [H+], and to the longer time intervals from the beginning of asphyxia to the blood sampling. In neither group were significant increases in blood glucose levels observed.
