Abstract

Smoke suppression is a complex subject. To understand it, the standards used to quantify smoke must be defined. Following that, one must understand how smoke can be controlled in a combustion process. Each of these topics is separately addressed and the zinc molybdate smoke suppressant technology in use today is highlighted. Some possible chemical routes are presented which attempt to account for the reduction of smoke during the burning process as well as the burning process itself. It is noted that there is still today much disagreement among the industry's scientific experts regarding the exact chemistry of these very complex processes. The proposed chemistry is offered for the interested reader.
