Abstract

A commercial durable flame retardant for cotton, PYROVATEX CP, generally shown in the literature as N-methylol-3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide, has been found not to be an individual compound but consists of several major species: N-methylol-3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide, N-methoxymethyl-3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide, N,N'-oxydimethyl-enebis(3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide) and 3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide. Various grades and sources of PYROVATEX CP have these components in different proportions. The complexity of PYROVATEX CP composition is the result of complications in treating 3-dimethoxyphosphorylpropionamide with commercial formaldehyde containing methanol.
