Abstract

Daventry is scheduled to grow from a population of 23,000 to 40,000 by 2021, and sustainable growth is the aim. A radical approach is needed to solving the problem of car dependence. Like other small towns, conventional public transport solutions are under-performing. PRT (personal rapid transport) offers the attributes of taxis, but with minimum waiting time and might be faster than cars in some cases. Daventry District Council commissioned Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) to undertake a two-phase study during 2007 reviewing the PRT concept. This paper summarises the technical work and the key findings, including the identification of a possible pilot scheme.
