Abstract

This article discusses the use of violence by the Islamic State of Syria (ISIS) from a behavioral perspective, including the implications that this violence may have for the future. The brutality of ISIS is strategic, as is its recruitment of young jihadists, Ba'ath officials, and Westerners, including women. The use of media to brand the group's violence is also discussed. The article concludes with recommendations for countering ISIS.
