Abstract

Empirical evidence for an insulating "self-factor" would be a valuable complement to the large body of recent theory and research in the sociology of crime and delinquency which stresses structural factors as sources of deviant behavior. By attempting to answer the question of why "good boys in high delinquency areas" are steered away from involvement in law-violating activities, the critical problem of why the majority of persons in groups which are presumably exposed to structural pressures toward deviance is addressed. In its basic orientation then, this research considers nondelinquent behavior, as well as delinquent behavior, to be problematic.
