Abstract

Reviews the book, Children in agony: A source book by Sibnath Deb (2006). This source book is an outcome of the author's in-depth research study on: 1) family violence and its impact on children, 2) child abuse and neglect, 3) child labour, 4) child trafficking and prostitution, 5) street children, and 6) juvenile delinquency. The author's agony tacitly expressed in the book, and out of which he has reported his research findings in a book such as this, lies in the fact that victimization of children in their formative days incurs huge loss of human resource that is badly needed for the development of a nation like ours. Dr. Deb, author of this book, has illustrated very vividly how failure to meet expectation of their parents and teachers in the sphere of academic achievement leads to children's physical injury and mental agony sometimes even culminating in suicide. The author has explained all the terms of the text very clearly, thus making the text easier to understand with respect to causative factors as well as preventive and remedial measures. To child rights activists as well as policy makers, this source book will serve as a guide to pave the way in their task of meeting the needs of the children.
