Abstract

The article offers an analysis of the problem of human trafficking and forced labor. It is posed that there has been an increase in public awareness on the problems of people smuggling, forced labor, and human trafficking during the last ten years. Relative to this, it is stated that the United Nations was the first body to implement the two protocols on human trafficking and people smuggling in 2000. By doing this, the UN was able to identify between human trafficking and people smuggling. The UN was also the first to include forced labor in the definition of trafficking in human beings. The case of the Chinese cockle pickers who drowned in Morecambe Bay on February 5, 2004 was also mentioned.
