Abstract

This article is a reprint from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Disaster Technical Assistance Center (DTAC) publication, The Dialogue. It describes an independent evaluation of the effectiveness of services provided by outreach workers in Iowa. SAMHSA works to improve the quality and availability of substance abuse prevention, alcohol and drug addiction treatment, and mental health services. SAMHSA is part of the us. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA's DTAC provides technical assistance (TA) to the states and territories in preparation for and response to mental health and substance abuse needs associated with catastrophic events. Based on state-identified needs, SAMHSA DTAC staff members are working to close gaps in preparedness through identification, documentation, and dissemination of best practices. The Dialogue is an arena for professionals in the disaster behavioral health field to share information, resources, trends, solutions to problems, and accomplishments. Readers are invited to contribute profiles of successful programs, book reviews, highlights of state and regional trainings, and other news items. The DTAC website is http://mentalhealth.samsha.gov/dtac.
