Abstract

Relapse continues to be a problem with individuals with schizophrenia and related conditions (Dharwadkar, 1991), Husted (2004). Even in a state like Minnesota with a long history of excellent programs serving individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, the rate of rehospitalization was over 30% per year in 1999 (Husted, et al., 2000), and 50.4% in 2008 (Minnesota Dept. of Human Services, 2009) in the area of western Minnesota investigated in the present manuscript (Minnesota Dept. of Human Services, 2009). The present study revisits the same group of 4 bed corporate foster homes located in rural western Minnesota three years later. The rate of yearly rehospitalization was evaluated for the residents living in these homes. A voluntary semi-structured interview was added to the design to help determine specific factors involved in the homes' milieu which may add or detract to their effectiveness.
