Abstract

Rodeo cowboys answered questionnaires assessing conformity to masculine norms and willingness to engage in help-seeking behaviors for depressive symptoms. Participants were recruited through direct survey mailing to membership lists of amateur rodeo and roping associations and by E-mails. One hundred thirty-six surveys were complete enough for analysis.

RESULTS indicated a) the endorsement of 5 of 9 masculine norms, b) 30 of 99 possible correlations were significant when correlating 9 masculine norms with 11 help-seeking behaviors for depressive symptoms when controlling for the tendency to answer in a socially desirable direction, and c) a significant orthogonal relationship between the endorsement of masculine norms Emotional Control and Power Over Women with the endorsement of being highly unlikely to talk to a best friend or a mental health professional if experiencing a major depressive episode.
