Abstract

The severely emotionally disturbed adolescent (SEDA) requires a markedly different therapeutic approach from that used with adolescents who are experiencing problems, even severe ones, arising out of variations of normal adolescent growth and development. SEDAs are often products of dysfunctional family systems, and they bring vestiges of these systems into group therapy. They often project conflicts with parents onto the leaders and display in the group the maladaptive behaviors and idiosyncratic belief systems fostered in the family unit
