Abstract

This commentary discusses regulatory options for addressing electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)-related overheating, fire or explosion events in the USA. Currently, ENDS fall into a regulatory void, leaving customers unprotected from shoddy manufacturing and malfunctioning batteries. However, given the much greater harm caused by conventional tobacco products, efforts to address injuries caused by malfunctioning ENDS should not derail progress on tobacco control measures that are likely to have a much larger public health impact.
