Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the recent trends in traffic accidents in Japan's Nara Prefecture, based on publicly available traffic accident statistics. The results showed that the ratio of seriously injured persons to total injured persons was higher in Nara Prefecture than in the rest of Japan. This high ratio of seriously injured persons was due to the high rate of aging of Nara's population. Based on our findings and examples of traffic safety measures in Nara Prefecture, this paper can help decide the direction of future traffic safety measures not only in Nara Prefecture, but also in Japan as a whole.
