Abstract

In Jiu Valley coal basin (Romania), the thick coal seam no. 3 is mined with sublevel coal caving methods in longwall faces, supported by metallic individual caps and props. The synthesis of two geomechanical phenomena developed around the faces and a methane gas deflagration which lead to the support failure and the human accidents are presented in this paper. All the accidents are occurred in the starting point of the panels mining. The analysis and causes of accidents and some technical propositions in order to prevent the outcome of these types of phenomena are also described in detail in this paper.
