Abstract

This paper investigates effectiveness and driver acceptance of a driver support system for collision avoidance with situation adaptive steering function. The system sets off an alert when the car is coming close to a pedestrian, and initiates a collision avoidance maneuver upon detecting the driver's braking or turning the steering wheel. The results of a cognitive experiment with a driving simulator showed that the safety was improved by the system and that the participants accepted the system's operation.
