Abstract

Numbers of traffic accident fatalities in Japan have been decreasing in recent years. However, approximately 5,000 deaths were confirmed in 2009. Therefore, an injury prediction system is considered to be useful for reducing the traffic accident fatalities. In this study, computer simulations of side collision accidents were conducted, and a database of occupant injuries under various accident conditions was constructed. The database was also statistically analyzed in order to determine injury prediction formulas. The injury prediction formulas have explanatory variables that consist of vehicle characteristics, occupant characteristics and accident conditions, and have AIS of head and thorax as objective variables.
