Abstract

The algorithm of inferring driver's intention of "restart" operation, resuming vehicle motion after a pause at an intersection with a stop sign, was developed, in order to apply to the crossing collision prevention system. To infer with insignificant delay, the state transition model of driving behavior around an intersection with a stop sign was utilized. The algorithm can estimate restart intention by following the states from the initial to the restart using driver operations and vehicle motions. The performance of the algorithm was tested against driving data of subjects in public roads. The test results are reported, with the description of the algorithm.
