Abstract

In the UK, nitrous oxide is the second most popular recreational drug used amongst 16-24-year-olds after cannabis.

Colloquially known as 'laughing gas,' nitrous oxide inhalation induces a brief intoxication manifesting with feelings of relaxation and euphoria. During use, the pain threshold is heightened and there is a decreased level of awareness, leaving the user vulnerable to cold contact burns.
