Abstract

Motor learning and the technical training of footballers. The problems arising out of inadequate technical training of footballers are considered. Deficiencies of this type are attributed to the tendencies of trainers to concentrate exclusively on the strengthening of athletes' physical and tactical skills and, even more important, to scanty knowledge of the laws governing motor learning and the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying this process. It is maintained that the strategies adopted for the teaching of football technique generally centre on visual afferences and knowledge of the final result, whereas during the learning stage it is held to be fundamentally important to use joint and skin information, as well as to train and bolster the 'perceptual trace'. It is also considered vital to work on the mechanisms and afferences that are of maximum importance in timing and that type of anticipation defined by Poulton as effectorial.
