Abstract

Attention is drawn to certain uncommon, but very serious injuries to the cervical spine in athletes. Serious sprains may, indeed, not be noticed, since strong muscles can compensate for the inefficiency of the injured ligaments, and the athlete is not prevented from continuing. The way in which these serious lesions should be investigated, and their orthopedic and surgical management are discussed in the light of experimental work on the stability of the cervical spine.
