Abstract

There are no uniform requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of advertising signs. Apart from the problems this creates for people wanting to erect advertising signs it creates a further dimension when attempting to relate signs and the driving task because a non-uniform set is presented. There are few published studies of the effects of advertising signs on accidents along lengths of road and the most recent was 20 years ago. In permitting or refusing the installation of all advertising signs, it is probable that the considerations of esthetics and visual clutter will be thought by the community to be more important than any safety effects. There is no current evidence to say that advertising signs, in general, are causing traffic accidents.
