Abstract

Two means are suggested for increasing the rush-hour capacity of urban train systems already operating trains of maximum headway. They are: replacing some or all of the regular cars by standee-only cars; and using double-length trains and, at the stations, having each train first stop with its front half alongside the station platform, and then advance to put its second half alongside the platform. A theoretical analysis shows that these methods can lead to a significant increase in the carrying capacity of a system. Formulas are presented for estimating the increase.
